Respect is shown, not merely felt
In most Nigerian households, respect is expressed through form: how you greet, whom you greet first, how you speak to elders, and whether you wait to be introduced. Warmth without form can read as carelessness, even when the affection is genuine.
What to learn before the first meeting
Ask your partner these directly, and practise the answers.
- How to greet parents and elders correctly, including any expected posture
- Which family members must be informed before anything is announced
- What the traditional ceremony involves, and what is expected of your family
- How the family understands bride price or dowry conversations
- Which church or denomination the family belongs to, and what attendance means
- What topics are discussed privately rather than at the table
The point is not performance
You are not auditioning. You are demonstrating that you intend to enter a family rather than extract a person from one. Nigerian families generally receive genuine effort with real generosity, even when the effort is imperfect.
