Nigerian foundations: what to understand

Family, faith, respect and process in Nigerian homes.

Reading

Take your time with it.

Marriage is a process, not an event: introduction, family enquiry, traditional rites, then church. Each stage has protocol and each protocol is a form of respect.

Elders matter, and so does how you greet them. Learn the greeting for your match's ethnic group and use it without irony.

Faith is often expressive and public. Prayer is loud, expectant and communal. Do not read volume as pressure.

Extended family responsibility is normal and often lifelong. Ask early what is expected, in numbers, not feelings.

Titles, achievement and provision are read as seriousness. Do not perform wealth. Do show diligence.
